Choosing the Best Car to Do Route 66
To see the real heart and soul of Route 66, you need to get up close and personal. We're not talking about visiting just a few major cities along the highway: We mean journeying through all eight states by car or bike, meeting the locals, staying in motels and experiencing the spirit of this legendary road.
As a premier American road trip destination, the only true way to experience Route 66 is by driving/riding. From quirky roadside attractions like Texas’ famous Cadillac Ranch to breathtaking views along the rim of the Grand Canyon, it’s the best way to get to places that are at the heart of the American experience. Car/Bike rental allows you to take your time and get up close and personal with the people and culture of America in a way that plane or coach travel simply doesn’t.
Luckily, all of our great destinations and tours can be explored by car, whether you drive yourself or let one of our expert tour guides take the wheel. From the comfort of a private vehicle, you'll be able to see and experience all that the Mother Road has to offer.
Keen to see Route 66 on a car/bike tour? Here are the key details that you need to know.
What cars are available?
At Route 66 Tours, our main aim is to ensure your experience is as genuine as possible. While the sights and sounds of Route 66 are pretty special, you'll be spending a lot of time in a vehicle, which means car selection is critical. As for riders, the Harley Davidson is simply perfect.
The best car to do Route 66 varies depending on your priorities. Do you want plush seats and in-car technology? What about a V8 Muscle Car like those that would have cruised Route 66 back in its glory days? For others, it’s all about the feeling of the wind blowing in your hair mile after glorious mile. Whatever your dream car entails, Route 66 Tours can make it happen.
We liaise our cars with Hertz, who prioritise safety, comfort and function — allowing you to have a wide selection of high-quality vehicles to choose from. Hertz also offers 24/7 roadside service and all vehicles are extremely reliable and comfortable. For those driving one way, the fee charged directly by Hertz is not included. Travel insurance is also required but is not included in your package.
Available cars include the standard SUV tour cars, V8 sports cars and convertibles.
Standard SUV tour cars
With premium storage space, comfortable seats and multiple entertainment options, our most popular tour options are SUV tour cars. In addition to offering all the features you need, the SUVs’ higher driving position means you see as much of the road as possible (because you wouldn't want to miss a centimetre).
Our SUV tour cars include:
Hyundai Santa Fe*

V8 Sports cars and convertibles
While the convenience and comfort of an SUV is hard to beat, some of our clients want more. For those hoping to see Route 66 from a special set of wheels, you can choose to upgrade to a larger SUV or select an option from a limited range of convertibles or Hertz’s V8 Muscle Car Adrenalin Collection.
Just imagine cruising down Route 66 with the roof down, the wind in your hair and the smell of freedom and burning gasoline — memories that will last a lifetime. The muscle car or convertible of your dreams is available for the classic American road trip.
If you're interested in navigating down Route 66 in a Convertible or V8, please let us know as early as possible as limited upgrades are available. You can select from:

Self-drive or tour guide
One of the most important decisions that you'll make while planning your Route 66 road trip is whether you want to take the wheel or not. We offer both self-guided and fully guided tour options. Whatever your preference, we want to offer you a way to see the real Route 66.
With a self-drive, fully guided tour, we provide a Route 66 guide, but you have complete control about where and when you go. This means you can sleep in, depart late or even take a detour to somewhere off the map. For many, being the one behind the wheel all the way from Illinois to the California is part of the Route 66 experience. If you have the driving ability and experience, and a passion for the road, self-driving is for you, and our guides will show you the best of 66.
That said, if you don't want to drive on the right-hand side of the road and would rather avoid dealing with traffic and parking, you can be a passenger in our guide driven vehicle. Our guides can chauffeur you across the wild west, so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the scenery.
